Uplistsikhe cave – Mtskheta

You can see the monastery of Javari and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, which are also included in the UNESCO heritage list. Visit the administrative center of Kartli – Gori, where the leader of the Soviet Union Joseph Stalin was born. After that, you will find the cave town Uplistsikhe, carved into the rock. Uplistsikhe, the fortress of the Lord, and to this day keeps its antique charm. In view of the interest in this extraordinary place, Uplistsikhe annually visits most of tourists.

SIGHTS TO VISIT

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (XI centry) – one of the four greatest Cathedrals (Oshki, Bagrati Temple, Alaverdi). It is the largest historic church complex in Georgia among those who survived. During centuries it represented religious center of Christian Georgia. The Robe of Jesus and the Coat of St. Elias Prophet are buried in Svetitskhoveli.

Jvari Monastery (VI century) – Monastery is located at the tributaries of rivers Mtkvari and Aragvi, on the top of rocky mountain. It is included in the list of World Cultural Inheritance Monuments. In 30ies of IV centuries as soon as Christianity was adopted, King Mirian III erected wooden cross on this place, which later except Georgians was worshipped by the Christians from Caucasus that’s why further the Monastery built on this place was named Jvari Monastery.

Uplistsikhe – city engraved in rock, one of the oldest settlements of Caucasus and city center. Firstly we meet in VII century dated written sources. Group of Archaeological monuments are kept in Uplistsikhe and suburbs, from which oldest one belongs to Early Bronze Age and Mtkvar-Araksi Culture.

Ioseb Stalin State Museum (Optional)– Museum under the name of Ioseb Stalin, Leader of Soviet Union in Gori, Georgia was established in 1937. The museum is of historic classification. At about 60 000 works are kept in there. Museum complex unites Memorial House where Stalin was born, exposition building with tower and personal wagon of Stalin by which he travelled to Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam. Museum also keeps the personal belongings of Stalin.

ITINERARY

In the morning catching up for the vehicle we will go to visit first capital of Georgia. We will visit Jvari Monastery (VI century) and Svetitskhoveli (XI century) which are the monuments of UNESCO heritage in Mtskheta. From Mtskheta we will continue our way to the city of Gori and visit the House Museum of Ioseb Stalin, Leader of Soviet Union. Afterwards, we will visit the city of Uplistsikhe (VI century) which is cut in the rock. Uplistsikhe means “Fortress of God.” Uplistsikhe is the city settled in the rocky mountain which we have to visit through walking. Dinner at local restaurant. After dinner we will go back to Tbilisi.
